Default Silly mistake replacing the fuel pump

Sad story. I decided to replace my fuel pump with a Holley yesterday. So, off to the parts store for the pump and a few other parts. They didn't have the pump, and upon my return home my over zealous nephew (who I know is secretly hoping I will him the car) removed the fuel pump without first installing the retaining bolt in the front of the engine.

Is there an easy way to push the rod back without having to take off the whole plate? Any other advice?

Thanks

Grap it with a pair of needle nose pliers and work it up into the whole, if it hits the cam lobe you might have to bump the eng over a little allow it to slide all the way up.

I've done it, but it was just luck. I was able to get enough pressure on the rod by spraying it with starter fluid (very volitile) and using a short pencil with an erasure to get it started upward. When there is a little progress, tighten the bolt and use your finger to push it the rest of the way. In other words, clean the rod, use the erasure end of the pencil to get it started upward, and work it up from there with your finger.
