I am going to be putting an engine together sooner or later and i was wondering if their is a website that details the steps to paint an engine. There is bare metal now and do i paint the block with the heads, oil pan, ect on it already or paint the individual pieces? Thanks for any help!! :D

I just did a write up on this on <gasp> another forum I'm on. I did the heads but it can work the same way.. here ya go.

So... I got my heads back from the machine shop today, after looking at em, I decided I'll throw some paint on. I figured what the hell, I'll share the basics with some of you clowns.

First off, lets go over the materials you'll need for painting pretty much anything.

A can of wax/grease remover, paint, paper towels, scotch pad, junk valve covers, and not shown are tape, and razor blade.

You start off with your bare surface, grab a wad of paper towels and the cleaner. Pour a little cleaner onto the towel and rub onto the surface of the head. Once the area is wiped down, wipe it off with a clean towel to get the excess residue off.

Now, tape off your intake and exhaust ports, so you wont spray directly onto the valves. I chose to use duct tape since regular masking tape doesnt stick well to cast iron. While you are taping, grab your razor blade and trim the excess tape off.

Once the ports are masked off, you can sand any rough spots or left over paint. You dont have to go too crazy, they are heads after all.
After sanding, grab more towels and cleaner and repeat from earlier.

Now they are clean, Place valve covers on the top of the heads to protect the valve springs and seats from over spray.

Shake the spray can for 60 seconds, do a couple test sprays and begin to lay a dust coat to let additional coats sink in. Wait 5 minutes for the paint to flash, then add a slightly thicker coat. Again, wait 5 minutes and add your uniform coat.

Let dry for 3-6 hours before handling it.

here's what the final product should look like.

I think it was Lars that suggested using a better type of paint than that out of a spray can. After spending a lot of time preping the intake manifold I sprayed it with a good quality engine paint and its peeling in a few spots.
