1. I have a 71 vette...auto...my differential has a whine that gets louder as I cross 50mph...if I back off the gas the whine stops...I've been told that it probably is the pinion bearing...does that sound right to you guys?
2. If that is the problem, should I have someone local do it, or just buy a rebuilt one/exchange from one of the online sites?
3.If I do the exchange/rebuilt route online, which sites are the best for cost/quality?
4. Anyone use vetteperfect for a rebuilt differential? They seem to have the best price I could find.
Thanks.

I had mine rebuilt by Van Steel (who is a forum vendor and does exceptional work)
Sounds like a front pinion bearing. A good shop can rebuild these as can Van Steel,Zip,Ikerds, or Bairs. What you should do is ask your local guys what they do for a rebuild, other then bearings and seals do they go into the posi, paint them, do any kind of performance work. Also the side yokes are not usually part of the job, they are extra.
Good luck,
Gary
Hi guys, Im wondering the same. I was just planning to ship it off to Van Steel. I have the car totally torn down and am now putting it back together. I noticed that ithe rear-end is leaking oil so I am just going to have the whole thing rebuilt. Does anyone see any difference between Van Steel or Bairds? Also, will UPS be able to ship it. As you al know. it weighs a ton. :flag
I had my 79 diff rebuilt locally. i took it out, bought the parts and handed them the diff to do the work. breakdown, $200 on rebuild kit, $200 in rebuilt axle yokes from Bair's, $200 labor, reused same gears, total $600.00 all :)
