I have one. I think it is the best distributor to come along since the K66 ball bearing unit Chevy installed. The MSD also uses ball bearings and is very high quality.
Blue427, not sure what you man by 'ready to run.' Does MSD make distributors that don't need MSD boxes and work with regular coils? That would be a nice way to spread the cost of this little enterprise out a little bit.
The K66 had to have a box to run too. Think of it as a replacement for the K66. Old distributors can be rebuilt, but they were never on par with the K66 or the new billet MSD's.

Re: MSD Tach Drive Distributor (Chuck Harmon)
I would love to have a later distributor but I don't want to have to add a box. Is there one out there or would I just be better off rebuilding mine next winter?
I had one, actually still do, ran it for about 8 years. Ran so well I never looked inside it. When I finally did (after ~8 years) I noticed that it was quite corroded. This is a car that spends most of it's time in a garage...I was quite surprised by that. Wd40 that puppy just to minimize corrosion. Cannot say anything negative about how it ran though.
IF you want to consider other options, you might be better off getting an electronic tach from a 75-77 and then getting one of many HEI type tachs. You can get stand-alone tachs and your choices are extensive. I wish would have done this to begin with.
How much of a difference is there between MSD and HEI?
I originally planned on swapping tachs when I pulled the dash a while back, but I didn't. What a huge mistake. Should I go ahead and schedule a weekend to pull the dash and swap tachs, then just run a non-tach drive distributor and either HEI or MSD?
Mallory does have the elect. stand alone unit ~$365. magnetic breakerless or unilite. These are mech tach drives. coil seperate from the distributor just like the MSD. I called A local shop (specialize in distributors) He recommended the magnetic breakerless over the unilite.
I have one and love it. It is very user friendly. Get a Digital box or a 6AL which have rev limiters in them. It is nice knowing that you can tach the hell out of your car and it is protectected by the limiter IMHO.
After seeing how much tach lag my ZO6 has in 1st and 2nd gear, I think the only solution is to get a good shift light. Something that doesn't stick out in ricer fashion.
I got the Mallory tach drive Unilite on the '67. No vacuum advance, and burnt the coil and module up by accidentally leaving the key on- ran OK other than that-
