Default 82 rough idle

First time purchaser of an 82. Owner says he will correct the rough, low idle. Any suggestions? I provided him service bulletin info on rough idle, but thought this forum may give me faster results. Any help out there?

All CFI cars have somewhat of a rough idle when cold but it should be smooth when warm. If the idle speed is below 600rpm it is low, although 750-800 rpm is a nice idle speed. To raise the idle RPM you need to set minimum air since the ECM actually controls the idle. If you can, hook up a scanner and read the IAc positions. It should be around 10-40 (these are pos. numbers, they range fom 0-255). If it is higher the ECM is trying to raise the idle rpm but it will try to return to a normal IAC position giving the erratic idle.

The proper way to set minimum is in gear with the IAC'splugged. Set the idle around 400rpm.

Setting minimum air is a bit tricky and you need a water manometer.

Also a bad coolant sensor in the front of the intake manifold will cause a rough idle.
