Currently $101 for a NOS radiator cap! Zip has a cap that is much closer to original for $29.

Question for you and other Forum members: Are these guys nuts or would the cap actually be worth over $100 to someone restoring a vehicle?

What appeared to be an original sold for $105 this past week. I wouldn't pay that much for it, but someone did. It is unfortunate that some people just have no idea what they are bidding on.

I am not aware of all the fine points in distinguishing repro vs original vs service replacement radiator caps but people do care about this stuff, and they care beyond what the judging "points" are worth.

Here is another one that I understand even less than the radiator cap. NOS 68 exhaust tips??

After you spot weld these things on are these noticeably different from the $35 reproductions?

Whether it works or not is probably not a consideration. Anyone paying that much for a radiator cap it most likely building a trailer queen, and money is no object.

This is just another case of people fluffing bids. It happens all the time. My friend works for a Kawasaki dealership that sells parts all the time this way.

If someone is selling something they'll make it appear worth more by getting a couple of their friends to bid up the part. That way whatever lone schmuck is out there will get hooked into believing it must be worth that much if 10 people are bidding that high.

Buyer beware, Ebay is NOT the place to find out what something may be actually worth. This guy is an idiot.

I got burned once and once only by someone using their friend to bid up the price on some70 original rockers used! I bought them and consider it a lesson learned.

Some of these bidders are NUTS!!! That is why we have this forum to keep the hobby going for the rest of us.

There is an NOS (Service Parts Replacement )1972-76 shifter console that closes on e-bay today. It is alreay up to $256.00. It is not even the same as the original that came with the car!

You can by a Corvette America console (which meets NCRS standards) for $125.00 all day long! In fact I heard that the latest versions are real close to the original and almost indistiguishable at first look.

Nuts I tell ya!

No repro part meets NCRS standards. NCRS doesn't even certify or list acceptable repro parts. What you'll loose on points depends on what's being judged but the only way a car can be 100 percent is to be 100 percent factory and that means a lot of NOS and very expensive parts like the radiator cap.

To me, I could give a sheet. But to someone going for a cert, it could matter to them.

It's probably some IT programmer who's bored out his skull and likes eBay......the guy is restoring a car and makes over a $100k per year.....so what if he spends $70-$80 over sticker ??? :p:

This is one more reason to be cautious when bidding. ;)
Heck, just last week I was getting "Torched" by forum members for paying over $500 on a set of A-arms with ball joints & bushings painted correct colors and assembled.

Everbody has different "motives" for what they do but people who 'run' eBay really have the last laugh.....on the way to the BANK !

Don't worry, I'm not offended in the least.

That's the thing about this country, you can't seem to open your mouth without offending someone and that's a shame

What's funny here is who ever is buying this DOES NOT KNOW what he is buying. The caps that said "Inspect Fall & Spring" ARE NOT CORRECT for NCRS. Yes, while this is technically NOS, IT IS NOT an original production cap on '68-'72's. It may be an NOS Service Replacement form way back when, but it is'nt the right one for Bloomington OR NCRS judging. I think I have a box of these I bought for $5 at a local swap meet. Hmmmmmmmmmm, guess I need to set up an eBay account quick!
