I need help. My shifter is not shifting into the proper gears. Is it better to get a Hurst replacement(if there is one), or try and rebuild my old one? Not real sure what the problem is exactly, but it has moved over too far and is hitting the left side if the interior trim. Shifter has become sloppy, and does not go into third or first without searching. Any ideas. Thanks for any help.
Prolly the bushings are worn, you can purchase a shifter rebuild kit from any of the Corvette vendors. After rebuild, be shure you use the tool provided to perfectly align the shifter rods into the tranny arms. This tool is a rod that goes into the shifter and prevents the rods from moving as you adjust the length. I am guessing this is your problem as well...the rods may be out of adjustment.
Forgot to mention, you can also use a drill bit, forgot the size, could be 5/16", you just have to try different sizes. The correct size will prevent arm movement
OK, yes your stock shifter probably needs rebuilding and realigning BUT because ithe shifter is bolted to the car instead of the trans you could have another problem. Make sure all your motor and trans mounts are good. If the motor is lifting off a broken mount on acceleration it will jam up the shift linkage!
If you want a GOOD shifter go with the Hurst Competition Plus. It bolts to the trans but check your mounts anyways.
I'd go with the Hurst, get the stock poopieer arm accessory if you wish to keep appearance correct. Sounds like you may have a broken trans mount though.
