Default my rearaxle is dancing

I have not a good feeling because my rearaxle has to much play.
I know that the bearings has to be adjustet / changed.
But when I pull the tire on 12 and 6 hard, you can see that the comlete
driveshaft going in and out at the diff. side.
Someone tells me the diff. has to be rebuild?!
Need some help.
Thanks
Joe

How much does it move? If I remember previous discussions correctly, GM has never specified a service limit for this dimension. There is a C-clip or something similar inside the differential which controls this dimension. The half-shaft provides location to the wheels and this changes as parts wear. I also seem to remember that movement up to 1/8" (3 mm) is acceptable. This is one reason people like the 6-link modification to the rear suspension.

You won't have to rebuild the carrier. Just replace the yokes. Which is still a big job.

Hello Frank
I checked the movement of the halfshaft and it is about 1/8"!
Don`t understand why the wheel (with the T-Arm) go in and out so much when I take it at 12 and 6.
What do you mean with the 6-link modification?
Thanks for your help!!!

This may not be part of the problem, but while you are back there check the condition of the camber strut rod bushings.

I see you have a '76 too. Mine were sloppy too. I took out the differential, popped the cover off, and saw one side yoke worn right up to c-clip. It wouldn't have been much longer until the clip fell off. Changed both side yokes. Interestingly both yoke were also twisted on my stock '76 L48. The side yokes on this year were very soft. Put in the yokes, mounted the diff, broke the cover when bolting the spring. Back to the drawing board....it's all good now with HD cover.
I believe you are due for side yokes- Muskegon Brakes $65. ea.
