Speedometer went crazy
My wife was driving and she said the speedometer went crazy and started spinning around like a clock, then it started going wildly back and forth...finally it spun and broke about 3/4 of the needle off. Now it sits at around 120mph when stopped and when you go it kind of shakes back and forth about 50 to 90 degrees and makes a strange sound (we decided it sounds like the rattle you hear if you have the top on a pot of boiling liquid).
Anyone had something like this happen?

I've never seen that one before. My 79 has cruise and the unit went out but the only thing that happened was that the speedo just stopped working.

The same exact thing happened in my 72. The speedometer started bouncing around and after a few miles, part of the needle broke off. This happened a few months back and I have yet to pull it out.

My guess is that the speedometer head bound up. I have seen it happen before. There are several gears in the head and it just bound up.

Thanks, I'll look into that. It happened a long time ago (didn't break the post) but seemed to fix itself....but it's stayed this time. DOH!
