Hi,
My fresh Paint job has developed a bubble the size of my thumb...:mad :mad
its on the passenger side just about a foot back from the rear of the door, right on top....I paid good money for my black base coat/clear coat finish...I don`t want to bring it back since it was a major pain with the painter...4 1/2 months and now he is going through divorce problems and getting his house and shop foreclosed on.
whats the best way to fix it...can I sand it and dab some clear on it...resand and buff? or is it in need of a complete resand and clear the entire rear end of the car?
any comments would be appreciated
The first thing to do is determine why it bubbled? Was it repaired there? What kind of primer and paint was it? Did he Bake the paint? You have to find out why it bubbled before the fix can be made. The best way is to repaint the whole back have. That would be the right way to do. If ya just touched it up, might cause some problems do the road.
Base coat / clear coat is the easiest paint to repair.
Was the car stripped down to bare glass ? Not knowing what year your vette is Could be the lacquer under your new paint causing the problem.
Anyway, the beauty of clear coat is you can wet sand the repaired paint and buff, if it is filled properly you'll never see it.
Good luck
Thanks for all the replys!!
This has been a 4 1/2 month ordeal for me and I`m going to cut my losses with this arrogant butt!!!
The car is a `74 and no it wasnt taken down to glass or baked when the paint was applied...It sat in the full sun yesturday for the first time and it has developed other areas of concern...most of his repairs have lifted and other bubbles have also shown up...it has been hand sanded and the first cut with compound has been applied...I have given him till friday to finish the polishing...if its not done I will be taking the car home and buffing it my self.
I will be using a waffle buffing wheel and purchasing the correct polishes from Dupont...I figure I cant screw it up any worse!!!
I`m furious, totally disgusted and my stress levels can`t be healthy.
again, thanks for your support!

Without taking a car down to gelcoat you have a can of worms. That is really the only way to go with a vette.Sounds like moisture trapped inside bubbling to escape in the heat.Painting a car has to be as clean as a surgery room. At least as clean as possible. There are steps to follow and many things can go wrong if they arent adhered too. Its all prep, painting is the easy part.Sorry for your misfortune. No one should have painted that car without stripping it down. especially black.I dont know what you paid, but if it was anything over 4000 it should have been done right. I know mine won best paint at world of wheels and it is black and I painted it. Materials alone on a quality paint job alone can cost 1500 and go to the moon for labor.Depending on what you have paid I would get money back .No polishing is going to fix paint bubbles.
sorry to here about your misfortune!! this happens alot with the older vettes if you dont take the necesary steps the gel coat starts to get old & rotten & develop small pin holes not seen by the eye anyways you paint or prime over them & trap moisture are just air in them !!! the worst part about it if you leave it out in the sun more will pop up now without seeing your car its hard to be sure thats what it is but ive seen it happen a few times with shops not experienced with the older vettes. before you do anything to it let it sit out in the sun a few days if more come up thats probably what happened
Just to let you guys know...I paid 5K to this guy who came well recommended and has alot of corvette experience...unfortunately his screwed up life got in my way!!!
I dont know what to do about it since I cant take him to court and I dont have another hard earned 5K to throw at the car :banghead: :banghead:
Thats a lot of money.I feel your pain. Maybe you can post some pics of the areas in need of repair. might be easier to repair than diagnosed.need to see to know what has to be done
