Need rear bearing installation/preload instructions
I'm pretty well equipped and knowledgeable (Have hydraulic press, mikes etc. But can't find bearing preload values for rear spindles or general instructions. Seems everyone wants to sell new assemblies and these things are kept secret. I'll probably go with 10 in-lbs preload if someone can't respond. My present assemblies have about .015 lateral play in them.
Any help is greatly appreciated. This is now urgent since it will be 55 degrees in NJ today.

Hi Larry,
It's no secret just check the GM service manuals and you'll find procedures, .001-.008" endplay and under .005" runout for rear bearings. You should set them up to .001-.002" endplay and try to get the runout as close to zero as you can.You can bolt your old rotors or new to the spindle and turn them as one to true them up. Also check the spindle flange where the rotor bolts up to and face that it needed. Everything you can do to eliminate runout will help the bearings and brake system.
Use Mobil 1 red synthetic automotive grease after you get the endplay set up. Set them using only spindle oil on the bearings. They have to be torqued to a minimum of 100 ft/lbs. Use an old spindle, setup tool,or make a undersize shaft up to set the bearings so that you can remove them without pressing on/off.
I don't know if the search is working but if so there ie a lot of info on this job in the archives.
