Ok, here is the deal. My car this morning had trouble starting. I got it to turn over, but I would have to give it some gas before it would start to warm up. But today it just stopped (like just died), and then it would'nt start again.
I'm thinking that it is maybe the spark plugs, and the need to be replaced, because I can smell the gas so I know the carb is getting feed gas. (The reason I think it is the spark plugs is because I don't know how bad they are)
If you could, can you give me what you think the problem might be. Thanks
Re: CAR CRANKS BUT DOES NOT START HELP!!!!!!! (VetteWild)
ok, usually spark plugs will not just die like that unless your motor is tuned really bad. You may want to check and see if spark is actually getting to the plugs... what year is it ? whaty type of ignition points, HEI, if your points are burned that could cause it to die, check the coil, i good way to check and see if it is getting fuel is to pull of the air cleaner and manually open and close the throttle by hand you should be able so see a good steam of gas from the accelerator pump. this next part is kinda strecthing it, make sure the distributor is tight you should not be able to spin it by hand....i hope some of this helps, it is hard to think of stuff when you are not under the hood

It could be flooded as well, especially if you smell a lot of gas. This happened to me this week after not starting it for a while. Take out the plugs and see if they are fouled - lots of gas, carbon, etc. Dry em off, clean em up and put them back in. Then spray some starting fluid in the carb to lean the mixture out and crank the engine without giving it any gas. It should start and then once warmed up run ok so you can adjust it. If this doesn't work, then check to make sure you're getting a spark to the plugs and go from there.

Well if you're smelling alot of gas-you probably fuel fouled your plugs, yaeh, pull em, if there soaked-go buy some new ones. Don't waste your time trying to dry them etc. been there done that :nono: Your plugs were probably in need of replacement-leading to your problem  That's where I'd start-because it's definitely ignition related. :seeya
You may have to put in your zip code to get to the picture.
You can verify this by pulling a plug and turning the motor over. If you get no spark , then I would start there. The control module can cause the whole distributor to not produce spark and they do go fairly often. Some forum members even carry spares with them.
Sometimes when they get hot they fail, the car sits and cools and it will start up again till it gets hot.
Its located under the distributor cap at the bottom. has electric plugs on both sides of it.
also check fuel delivery but looking down the carb when the gas is pushed. you should see the accell pump squirt some fuel in there. with that much fuel it should at least fire , might die quick but should at least fire for a sec.
