I want to install an HEI under the hood of my "72" small block. However I have to install A different aircleaner than stock. I am running the factory QJET. What after market aircleaner will fit? :banghead: I talked to the tech department at MOROSO and they informed me that there low prfile wont even fit under my small block hood. .....you could look into getting your points distributor rebuilt for electronic ignition......pretty sure you can retain the same sized cap and coil.....
There are a couple of options that don't require a new air cleaner. You can get one of the numerous electronic conversions to retrofit to your existing tach-drive distributor so that you have the electronics and can maintain your existing mechanical tach. If you must have an HEI, there is a small cap version that uses an external coil. Either of these options also allows you to retain your existing ignition shielding.
Take some aluminim foil and make a lightly packed ball and put it on the orig.air cleaner and shut the hood. This will tell you how much clearence you do have to play with. I'm using the 10" x 2" edelbrock #eld-1208 on my 75, I realize its not the same but it should work.
If you are going to swap out the air cleaner anyways, take a look at an offset base. It will move the aircleaner away from the HEI and no one will notice. Do an internet search for "offset air cleaners" there is a car parts place that sells them..... Maybe Summit has one also, or Jeggs....
