Dana 44 revisited
I'm planning on putting a dana 44 in my 79 and I am clueless at the moment as to what must change. I'm thinking that maybe if I get a C4 center section and use the brace and diff cover from an 80-81, that I can get away with minimal changes such as a little welding to mount a bracket for the 80-81 brace. The brace that is used after 79 looks like it could weigh alot less than the brick of a crossmember that I now have. What I need though is some pictures. I needs pictures of 80-81 rear suspensions and some pictures of some C4 rears so I can get an idea of what is going to be involved with this one.

Why not get a 1980-82 rear gear center section and rear gear cover? Why deal with a C4 center section at all ?
You may have to fab up a connection from the rear gear cover to the side frame rails, but the rest should just be a bolt in install.

I was told to stear clear of the 80-81 center sections because they were made out of aluminum and were prone to flexing. The reason I am even considering changing over to a dana is for their strenght. It would make life easier but easier is no fun and I don't think that there will be too much of a difference between the dana 44s out of a late C3 or the one out of C4.
