Was driving around the city the other day & was going down an ally when something caught my eye... I backed up to take a look & here, with weeds grown up to the windows, was a 1968 Vette. Got out of my truck to take a look & its in pretty rough shape...it has an aftermarket "stinger" type hood similar to a '67 the whole front end fibreglass needs to be replaced...its currently being held in place by some nice rusty wire, the rear quarter panels are cracked, aftermarket American Racing wheels, and most - if not all - of the chrome has been removed & is presumably MIA. Now as all Vette lover know...you just can't stand to see a car like that in distress. My question for all of you is what kind of offer should I make the guy on this car??

I have a Corvette Magazine (July 2003) that has a market report for C3's...it says that a "crummy" 1968 Vette will have a apporximate value of $7000...now do think this is in the right ball park? I know that 1968 is the first year of the Sharks and all but I just can't see myself paying this much for a car that I don't even know if the number match or not.

Please help me as I would like to rescue this shark & make it my own.

My first guess would be not to pay $7000 for that. But we need more info. Whats the interior like. under the hood. Frame root, window frame rot, etc.??

Havn't got a good look yet...just through a chain link fence...looks like someone started a resto but only got half way so I would suspect the frame to be ok...motor & drive train is not a huge issue for me as I have a back-up plan if this one is inoperable

 

Talk to the owners about it. offer them 2-3K for it. see what happens. Alot of people need the money these days.

By the time you resorect the presumely non-matching numbers car and replace everything you'll have $25,000.00 invested in a car worth $15,000.00 think twice.

 

cheap paintjob and a little rust = crummy

Falling apart amongst the weeds = parts car

 

I wouldn't take buy it. Sounds like a real handful. Unless you're really set on restoring a '68, I'd say pass, not even for free.

I agree with Cali above that you will almost certainly spend more to restore it than it will end up being worth. However that said you also have to consider what I call the "hobby value". If you want a project that you can work on over time and your end goal is not turning a profit or breaking even, then perhaps if you can get it cheap enough it may be worth it TO YOU. I had alot of hobbies over the years and never did I consider if I was spending more than I could get back. If I did, I wouldn't have had any hobbies. :lol:

Now when I graduated to old cars, I took the same mentality with me. I'm in it for the enjoyment and not to make a buck. If some day I were to decide to make this a business, then I would have to view it differently. But as long as this is something I'm doing for my enjoyment, then one has to realize that any "hobby" comes at a price. FWIW.

Lastly, even with all that I have stated above, do not be mislead into believing that an old neglected vette will be either inexpensive or easy to restore. Lots of work and lots more bucks will be involved. However if this is your "thing" and your goals are to have an ongoing project and end up with what I consider to be one of the best looking old cars of the last 40-50 years, then offer the owner as little as possible and go from there. Your offer can always go up but you can never come down. :nonod:

yes i agree, ive picked up a dozen cars for free one being a vette, the only challange is regestering

 

i would follow up on it, you could get it for a $100 and hose it off ,blow out the
inside etc. and get $2000 yourself, don't know till ya' try :hurray:

 

Need more info, but $2000-3000 is probably a minimum if there is anything left. It will probably part easily on Ebay for that. Depending on how many unique 68 parts were there would decide for me parts car or fixer.

 

The question isn't what we'd pay for it, it's what you'd pay for it. We can only go on your description and then evaluate based on our individual circumstances.

For me personally, I probably wouldn't pay that much. I probably wouldn't pay half that much either, unless it looked like it'd be a good parts car that I could make a few bucks off of on Ebay. But then again, I've also got a '79 sitting in my garage in the middle of tear down for a restoration. :cool:

If you're looking to do a resto on it, worth is in the eye of the beholder. For instance on my '79... I probably paid a few pennies too much up front to get ahold of it... but the car ('79 L82, 4 speed, black on black, not restored but not junk) is somewhat tough to find and I figured the few pennies extra was worth it to me. I'm also under no illusions I'll ever get back all the money I'm going to sink into it. But... that's okay... for me it's a hobby... I'm doing it for the love of this particular year Vette.... not as an investment.

Take another look or two at the '68... and ask yourself again if you think it's a good deal for you. The beauty of your situation is there's no price on it now... you can offer whatever you like to start off with. You never know what response you'll get. You might be walking into a great deal.

Forget it ...for the kind of money you'll have to spend you could buy a very nice 68. On the other hand, if you can buy it really cheap (less than 1500 - 2000), part it out and make a nice profit. I had a similar situation several years ago, I found a 73 BB in need of major repair, bought it for 1,100 sold off the parts and made a little more than $3,000 on the entire transaction. Gotta be worth $2000. Wouldn't go more unless all the parts were packed away someplace in a box and were in good shape.

Also, if you really like that car.....try to stay under $3000 US or $4000 CAN

 

I think if I had it to do over again I'd get a 69 over the 68 however she's my Baby and i love her for all her faults. if your not financially engaged already I'd say walk away and find yourself a a decent matching 3's chrome bumper shark in running condition for 8-12K and go with that.
