Default Wheel bearing torque?

I can't seem to find the torque spec in the aim for the large nut that holds the front hub. Anyone know?

TIA
Mick

Never mind found it in search. :banghead:

What did you find? What procedure did you use? There is a procedure that you should be using to set the front wheel bearings at close to .001 clearance.
Hint, you should never back the nut off to the nearest cottin bin hole and remember there are 2 differenct cotter pin holes so if one doesn't line up go looking for the second.

Off the top of my head ... You torque the nut to about 25 ft-lbs with the wheel spinning, to seat the bearing - back off the nut and finger tight to the closest
hole in the castle nut.

Norval ? 2 holes in your front spindle ? Pretty sure mine has only one.
Are you suggesting to use a dial guage ? Come on - tell us how you do it.

Originally the service manual had us torque the bearing nut to 12 ft/lbs, back off one nut flat and install the cotter pin. This gave anywhere from 0-.007 bearing clearance. Way too much.
Then they went to 12 ft/lbs back off until the nut was just loose then hand tighten the nut until one of the cotter pin holes in the spindle lined up. This gave .001-.005. STill too much.

This is how to do it.
While spiinning the rotor in the direction of forward vehicle travel torque the bearing nut to 15 ft/lbs. This sets the bearing.
Back off the nut until loose and again rotote in the forward positon retorqe to 50-60 INCH pounds and do not back off. Check for the second cotter hole or use valve shims to set the nut for the cotter pin.
This give .0005-.001.
I have done alot of work on spindles over the past winter and both sets I worked on had DOUBLE sets of cotter pin holes. If one didn't line up the second set did.
I can take pictures tonight of stock spindles if anyone doesn't believe in a second set of cotter pin holes in stock spindles.

Thanks, Norval. I'm gonna have to go out to teh garage tonight and look at my freshly painted spindles. I would think that I might notice two cotter pin holes.

Well, my refurbished spindles are '70 (presumed original).
I can check out my '75s, also.

Excuse my stupidity but what is inch/pounds in regards to ft/pounds?

Is it the same procedure for the back bearings?

12 in. lbs.= 1 ft lb. and the rear bearings are a whole different ball game.
