First drive with new Tremec
I could not wait to try it out. The console is still apart and no shift boot. Fired it up after sitting for 3 months and let everything warm up. Reset timing and listened for anything strange. No problems so off I went. Shifter is a little notchy but nothing bad. The shift gate is real close together and I went from 2nd to 5th a bunch of times. The transmission is very smooth. 1st gear with 3.70 rear is a real kick. It blows the tires away at will (lots of fun). The gear spacing is not bad at all. Little more rpm drop than the Muncie but nothing the motor can't overcome. Then the shift to 5th. 1600 rpm at 50 mph. Motor is barely above idle. I did not take it on the highway yet so I only got to 55 in 5th. Much quieter. Only put on about 20 miles. Just want to recheck everything to make sure nothing rattled loose and everything still looks good. So far this is a huge improvement. The shifting is already getting better, can't wait to get some more miles on it. :auto:

Well I had to take it out on the highway. WOW what a difference. Construction only allowed a short 65 mph ride but it sure is nice to do it at 2100 rpm. Quiet and the car just feels better. I could drive forever like this. As you can tell I am very pleased with it so far. Below 50 in 5th gear is just lugging the motor. I don't know how 3.08s would be. I don't have a low end motor but I would not want much less than a 3.55 rear with my motor. I'll try for some pictures when I have it back up in the air. Now we need some warm weather for top down cruising. :auto:

I am in the middle of the same swap in my 82 . I had to extend the trans mount perch on my crossmember ,,,,,,,, no biggie though . The drive shaft is the correct length and requires no alterations , all in all it is an easy swap so far .

I must admit it took awhile to get used to all that shifting with that tranny and a 3.70 gear but now I'm enjoying it and I got tremendous gas mileage on a recent trip to Bowling Greeen.

Alright. Glad to hear every one is enjoying their new trannies as much I am mine. They make these cars long legged. It makes them a blast to drive. Now I just have to get my car back from paint impound.

I think I saw this on other posts, but did you have to remove the transmission crossmember to get it in?

You don't have to but it is a whole lot easier with the cross member out. I have a Lakewood blow shield on mine and I don't know if it would have fit. It was not a big job to cut the crossmember and have brackets welded on.

I'm sure the welds are fine :thumbs: guess I should be carefull here with "The unvailing of the new power plant" , the "Turd" is DEAD... I hope :lolg: :lolg: :lolg: I'll finish up the small stuff tomorrow then it will be time to :auto: I already have the hearing protectors for the break in.....

The 200R4 or the 700R4. Both have been done by people here. I don't think the overdrive is quite as much as the Tremec but it is still overdrive.
