Default Mechanical Temp Gauge

Does anyone know if a mechanical temperature gauge exists for C3's? What I mean is, a mechanical gauge to replace the electrical temp gauge that a lot of us (including myself) seem to have problems with. Thanks

Don't think they make such a thing, it would need to allow the coolant to flow from the head to the gauge in the cluster and then back into the coolant system if there where no electronics involved.

A mechanical gauge has a long sealed tube that screws into the head. The tube contains a gas that expands and contracts based on temperature. This moves the needle. There is no coolant flow into/out of the car with one of these.

Interesting, how accurate?

Exactly. You don't have to worry about the sending unit and all the other hassles of the electrical gauge. I istalled a temporary one on my 69 til I can get the electrical gauge working. Only cost about $15-20 at local auto parts store

I installed an aftermarket temp gauge by transferring the face off the factory one onto the aftermarket unit, was only slightly off where the screws went through the face but you cannot tell unless you look at it real hard. You might be able to do the same with that mech gauge.

Only problem I had was it was not calibrated the same so it is a little off, and the fact I thought I had a 180 stat in when it was 160 so when I set it up I let the car warm up enough to to open the stat then set needle at 190 to be safe so I was (am-haven't fixed it yet) actually 30 degrees off.
