Default nuetral safety switch

I just replaced the starter relay just to find out the problem is probably the nuetral safety switch. The car starts in gear so I know it's bypassed like my old 77 was. If anyoneout there can decribe where the wiring comes into the fuse box I'd appreciate. The fuse box and relays look diffeent than the old 77 so I want to make sure I'm eye balling the right switch.

note when your 6'4" you tend to do your research before inverting yourself standing on your head with your feet dangling over the seat. :yesnod:

Is it a nuetral safety switch or a clutch engagement switch? I bypassed mine so I could start the eng when I was working on it without having to get in and push the clutch in everytime. The plug with prolly be hanging just above and to the left of the clutch pedal and you should see a short jumper wire in it.

Ecklers describes it as a nuetral safety switch. I will check it tonight. If there is a wire hanging out of it then it should be easily identifiable. I'm with ya, I want it bypassed as well. I hate getting back into the car to fire her up.

David, the manual cars don't have a neutral switch, just the clutch switch. You should see the switch up on a bracket on the clutch pedal assembly. It should have one purple wire and one purple w/white wire. As Fevre mentioned, you can jumper across them temporarily if you want to bypass the switch. I wouldn't recommend it as a permanent solution. I don't want to read a posting in the future about how you forgot the car was in gear, and bumped the nose in the garage when starting it up

Hey get this.

4:36 PM 3/6/2004
"Thirty seconds after I took the pictures the car wouldn't start. just as I thought the ground connection coming out of the starter body that bolts to the starter relay had come loose. When I bought the new relay the ground post did not line up with the hole and at an angle it double threaded and broke off flush in side the relay, brand new relay mind you.
See the silver phillip headed bolt going into the brass piece
I drilled out the broken off bolt and used a metal wood screw to make the connection. Well the vibration of the motor backed it out. I'll try another bubba move and see if I can put another bigger wood screw in but if not then off to Kraegan Auto I go for yet another relay.
The screw was loose and would not fire over. Loose or not if there is a connection of even one thread the damn thing should fire over?????

I rewired my entire car and to my knowledge the 68's do not have a nuetral safety switch.

Yep, I checked the AIM and it shows the neutral safety switch for RPO M35. Whatever that is. I could not find it, unless it means a 350 turbo hydra-Matic
Automatic Transmission.

68 manual transmission cars don't have any safety switches. Turn the key with the car in gear and you go through the garage door...

I think the confusion is 4 speed vs. automatic. Manual cars have a clutch switch and automatic cars have the neutral safety switch. one or the other not both. Back-up lights are wired into the neutral switch on automatics and for manual cars the back-up light switch is mounted on the side of the transmission. :smash: :smash:

Too late, with my msd ign and dist the car fired right up and left 2 black marks as it shoot into the back of the garage, lucky there was a tree behind my garage or it would have gone right through. My nose was already aged and cracking so no real harm done. A mistake I will never repeat. :iagree: though, it you do the switch jump make sure you check the trans everytime you start the car.
