Default Balancing Rotating Assy Question

If you have a matched set of rods, New Pistons, and New crank do you really need to spend the $200-$300 dollars in balancing? This is a 427 BB buildup.

Thanks

not absolutely necessary but the engine will run smoother when it is done properly. If you want to do a budget deal try to get the pistons and rods as close as you can, just use a technical electronic scale.

Depending on the quality of the crank you bought, you may have gotten a bob weight balance card with it. If your piston, wrist pin, and small end of the connecting rod matches the bobweight balance then it is not nessecary to rebalance. If you are unsure then it needs to be balanced.

If you feel it is nessecary to balance your wheels and tires, it is that much more important to balance your rotating assembly.

I believe in balancing. I do my own pistons because I am fussy about how the weight comes off. I also have a fixture for the rods and do them myself because i work to 1/100's of a gram and the balancers usually don't come anywhere near that.
As for saving money there is not a big discount because you did most of the balancing. They usually knock $50 off the price.
I do it because I want to carefully radius the pistons, debur and take the weight off where I want it taken off and I work to tighter tolerances then the guy doing the balancing is will to do.
Balancing is cheap. That said I have built lots of engines for others that didn't want to spend the money and the motors run fine.
Any engine built for me is balanced.
