Ok I really need some help here. Ever since I had the engine rebuilt I have had a problem starting the engine after it has reached operating temps. If I start it real soon after turning it off there is no problem but if I wait 15 to 20 minutes I have to crank the engine quite sometime before it will start and then I get some blue smoke after it starts. I have been told that this is caused from the fuel perculating in the carb and then when I go to start it the fuel is dumped and has to burn off before it starts. I am now on my third carb (Edlebrock 4106), the first two were Holly's but I get the same symptom no matter what carb I am using. I have a 1/2" wood composite spacer and a heat shield installed and I still get the same results. Now I am being told that maybe I need to wrap the fuel line because the fuel may be getting too hot in the line. The engine was punched .30 over with forged pistons, Comp Cam XE 268, stock heads that was ported and the engine has ~ 9.4:1 compression. Any help at all on this one would really be appreciated. This is getting frustrating! :mad
I have had the idential problem with my Q-Jet. Took it to a guy and he did something, but have not had time to talk to him about it.
He just said if this does not work he will take it off and use some JB Weld. Gonna get some more details, but right now it is suddenly starting very well. Nevertheless, I am skeptical since the problems has existed for two years.
All I know is this is really frustrating because other than this problem I am very happy with the rebuild. The engine runs strong but I just can't live with the starting problem. :smash: Besides this is not good for the engine with the gas dumping down on the pistons like this.
Gosh is this a familiar problem. Rebuilt a BB and after the 1st time it smoked. Took it back to the machine shop and they paid for a tear down and inspect. Found nothing!!, but changed the rings out to a different brand. For the most part it does not smoke but sometimes at startup after running or after sitting at a traffic light it will give a puff. Two machine shops swear the guides are perfect. They were cut for and use the PC seals. I guess just drive it, accept a little puff here and there and if the time comes again - consider a crate engine and save the org. in a bag for someone else.
My 74 does the same thing. I have had the carb rebuilt, new starter, etc...
My next step is to replace the fuel line. It almost touches the block in some areas so I suspect the fuel is boiling in the line.
