It's been a long day, so my mind has been drifting to Vette projects. I am working on a wireless ignition system to do away with unsightly plug wires by retrofitting my Linksys wireless router. With 5 ghz and fiberglass panels I should be able to mount the unit in the rear storage compartment. I will be using 8 of these units, one for each cylinder, each with its own IP (ignition pulse) address. I first thought I could use just one unit in a network configuration, but I fear a potential crossfire situation. Comments from others showing how I can avoid this would be appreciated.
I see one major flaw...using the wireless system, you open yourself to a security breach...hackers will be able to steal your pulse, thus leave you stranded by the side of the road.....Chuckster, Chuckster, you need to get a firewall, stand alone router, reroute the signal that it goes through a lead conduit, that means eight of the conduits...will be an unsighlty sight but, I suppose that can be routed under the chassis...now...how ya gonna terminate the lead conduits? I know...you will have to devise a spark receiver, the shampe of the Champeeeeeen spaaaak plugs...let me know how the project progesses....sounds sweet....I bet you could make a cool mil if it works...
Chuck, I'm your friend and I hate to have to say this to you, but have you ever heard the phrase:
"Shut up and drive!" ?
:D I heard that there was thunder in the Blossom Hills last weekend. I may stop by Tom's house sometime, you better be ready on a moment's notice to fire up the blue car!

Re: Wireless Ignition System (Chuck Harmon)
I hate unsightly wiring as much as the next guy. I don't think security will be a problem as long as you use 128 bit WEP, and don't stay in one place long enough for someone to de-coded the signals from your routers to your IP endpoints. If security is a major concern you can try to do a VPN to each cylinder. Can you do a dynamic IP for each cylinder, or will you have to have a table? I would like to see dynamic, that way you can un-address some cylinders when not needed (downhill) and maybe free up those addresses for others that need them.
Just make sure your Part 15, Class B, Sec. 15.247 and 15.109 FCC compliant. The FCC has been cracking down lately and I don't want to see you have to cut down your transmitter's modulation rate-output power.
Chuck,
I think you need to run a Linux fierwall /web proxy on each plug wire. That way you can tune you car via the internet.
With one box per plug it'd work great!
Not sure how you'd get 8 pc's in the engine compartment tho...
