Can anyone tell me exactly where did the factory put the oil temp sensor on the 81 and 82 vette? Do you have a picture of what it looks like. For the really tough question. How is it hooked up to the gauge? I know it is not on the circuit board. It must be stand alone somehow.
The oil temp gauge is stand alone. The circuit board was for a clock. My 1980 had the oil temp gauge but no sensor or wiring. I installed the sensor next to the distritbutor ( not sure if this was factory position) and added the three wires...positive, ground and sensor. You can still purchase the sensor from any AC Delco parts house for about $25.00.
If I am not mistaken, I think it is located directly above the oil filter in the block. As far as wiring, I never traced it pin for pin but it is not part of the circuit board for the other guages. Mine was stand alone with its own connector.
The temp gauge is part of the console circuit, the oil pressure gauge is not, it replaces the clock (and the circuit board/foil thing is just foled to clear the connector for the pressure gauge... talk about bubba from the factory)
I just changed my Oil Temp sensor. The gauge was doing funny things. Working fine now. The sensor is available from a few vendors. Here's a link to Eckler's

I know it sounds backward but that how I had to wire mine 15 years ago to get it to work and I traced the wiring on a friends 82 Collector Edition a couple of weeks ago for the fun of it to see if I was right...
