My new original style aluminum rad just arrived yesterday. Canadian taxes and duties seemed to be more than I expected (should I be surprised??), but the rad is a thing of beauty. Great looking and obviously a high quality product. Indestructible shipping container big enough to hold a truck rad!
Thanks Tom for the quick service and producing a high quality product!!
Dewitt reproductions are truly a top flight company and run by someone who truly knows what we go through fixing a corvette, he's done it himself. :yesnod:
I installed my A70A Direct Fit radiator this past Saturday. If you painted it black the only way you'd know it wasn't stock is by the TIG welds. And he ought to call it Perfect Fit. Everything was in the exact right location. Didn't have to make a single modification to anything. It only took me two hours to do the job and I wasn't even working hard. I doubt you could find a higher quality raditor than a DeWitts.
Bill, I chose Tom's "factory replacement" style, meaning it's identical to the one that came with the car when new. I didn't bother with the date coding service, as mine is not a "show car" but rather a driver. I have an old (not sure how old, but very old!) brass replacement radiator that works ok (I live in Canada, not Florida!) but looks to me like it doesn't have a lot of life in it. I figured I'd replace it before it leaves me stranded on the side of the road. Choice was between "direct fit" aluminum (price difference is about $200) or the original style. I went with the original only because it is more efficient than the direct fit and for the extra $200, I figured not a bad investment. I unwrapped it last night. Trust me, this is a thing of beauty. Flawless craftsmanship, in my opinion. Certainly not the cheapest option, but well worth the money!
PS. No, I'm not on Tom's payroll. Just appreciate an excellent product that far exceeds the quality of anything else I've seen.
Hey Tom Dewitt, was just about to order the "regular" radiator from one of the other vendors. Mine is a 74 L48.
How does your aluminum radiator compare, in price and other issues?
I had no cooling problems, but I'm just in the "replace everything mode", but "upgrading" on this thing is definitely worth considering.
Your thoughts?
Tnx,
Bill
Bill,
As you know, the 74 came with copper brass radiator. You could buy a replacement c/b for about $300 but some of the aftermarket c/b radiator still have a few mounting issues. We sell the "Direct fit" aluminum for $495 and it truely is a direct fit. It weight a little more than 1/2 the stock unit and boosts the cooling system rating about 35% higher. Paint it black (which we offer as an option) and no one will know its not stock. Here's yours:
I'm thinking about purchasing one from you soon, Tom.
Will I notice a difference from just the Direct fit alum radiator, over stock?
That depends on if you're running hot or not. You see, I have an 80 that has the stock copper radiator and it runs 180 all the time. Never goes any higher. So putting in an aluminum radiator might boost the cooling capabilities 25% but I probably will never notice.
You have several mods and might be running hotter in the summer, I don't know. Let's say that you run 220 max in the summer, then the aluminum radiator will bring that back down to the thermostat setting. Typically people report 30-35 degree drops.
Yeah, I have one of Tom's radiators also with the dual spal fans. Great quality and performance. Tom is very responsive to emails. It's great to have him out there!
