Going rate for a removable hardtop
I've got a hartop that was on my '71 LT-1 when I bought it 11 years ago. The last time it was on the car was, well, 11 years ago. Someone wants to look at it tomorrow, and I'm not sure what to tell them on price. It's in very nice condition, red with a black headliner. The price guides say to add $1500 for a hardtop, but I was under the impression that the tops have only been going for $5-700. Is anybody really getting $1500 more for their car because it has both tops? If not I think I'd rather have the money and the space back. Would $600 be too steep or to cheap?

I don't know if a car with the factory hard top option is really worth $1500 more. That seems steep, but the value is for a car with that option and the top not just the top. Less than half of the verts made in 71 had the hard top option. I think $600 for a top is fair. However if my vert had the hard top as a factory option, I wouldn't sale it even if I never used it. I think that it's worth more than $600 to keep the car complete.

In VERY GOOD condition with ALL the trim and headliner $1000 I bought an almost bare top for $200 and it cost almost $1000 to restore it.

If all the inside hardware and external mount points, headliner, weatherstripping, rear glass and trim are intact and in good to very good condition then I'd be shootin' for $1000 for the package. They don't make them anymore so they will only become more valuable over time to those who want but don't have one. Try buying all the correct pieces individually to recondition one and you'll see the price go over a grand.
It'll run you about that much in the aftermarket for like condition...maybe even more. I've got a hardtop in excellent condition but it's been hanging for years because I only use the car when the weather perfect so I can put the top down. I've considered selling it a few times for the space but I've resisted since it originally came with my car.

About 3-4 years ago I answered a local ad for vinyl covered top from a C3, I don't recall the year. The seller told me , to the best of his knowledge, it had never been used. He was asking $500.00 for it. I decided to pass on it because I figured I would never use it either.

Thanks for all the replies. Makes me rethink things a little bit. I do not know for sure if my car came with a hardtop, but it did not come with this particular top (it's got '72 dated glass). The guy has not come over yet, so it gives me a little more time to figure what to tell him.

Does the rear deck lid have a hole in the center for the top? This is usually a tell tale sign of a car with a factory hardtop from what I understand.
