Default Battery or Starter?

I don't know if I have a battery or a starter problem. Twice now when the engine has warmed up to operating temp (185) it wouldn't start unless I use my charger/starter connected. The battery seems to be good. The lights, radio, and horn work but the engine tries to turn over but it only turns over a couple of cranks and then I get a clicking sound which I assume is coming from the solenoid. I would appreciate any help you all can give me on this.

Almost sounds like heat soak. Have you checked the battery voltage to see what it is when it is giving you problems? If the voltage is nominal, may want to check the grounds at the starter and see if they are good and clean.

I haven't checked any voltages yet. I will try to do that tomorrow if I get home from work. I am also going to check each cell and see what that shows.

Thanks,
Ron

A few years ago mine did the same thing. I went thru a couple of batteries, then I went out and got a more powerful (more CCA) and havent had a problem since then.

If the battery recharges quickly then your battery probably has stopped taking a full charge. A good battery should perform through that scenario.

Thanks for all of the replies. It seems like I have had all of these "coincidences" lately since my engine rebuild. I will definitley look in the battery direction.

Also check your negative battery cable to where it grounds on the frame below the battery compartment. Three out of four of these on my C3s were "swelled up" with that "green corrosion" in the cables at the frame end where it's exposed to the elements.

Could be either or both. Unless something kills it first, batteries gradually loose power with use and time. At the same time, the power draw of starters can increase with wear. While starter's power needs increases with heat, the power to it from the battery is decreased. I've seen caes where replacing where replacing either one hasd solved the problem (i.e., a more powerful battery or a new starter than needs less power). Perhaps the increased compression from your recent rebuild has pushed things beyond the ability or one or the other.

:iagree:
Id replace both just to be sure your not going to get stranded at a most unfortunate time or place.

Good advice from Paul also for checking the frame ground connection. Dissimilar metals once touching like to start corroding and once started, never really stop.

Thanks everyone. I replaced the battery and it works like a champ. I am however going to change out the starter too just to be on the safe side. I have this nagging feeling that it may be going also. Maybe not but for the price I would rather have the peace of mind.

Thanks,
Ron
