Default Speedometer cable lube?

What's the best way to get the speedo. cable lubricated? Can it just be removed from the transmission end? Also, what's the best lubricant to use on the cable? My vette was sitting for quite a while and I'm sure it probably needs it, even though the speedometer works fine and I don't hear any cable noise.
'78/L82/4spd./no cruise control. Anyone done it lately? Thanks

I was under my 76 to put a shift kit in a couple of weeks ago. I figured I would pull the cable out from the transmission end and lube it. Unscrewed it from the tranny but the cable would not come out. I am now under the impression that it must be removed from the speedometer end. That seems to be more work than what I thought. I started to take the dash cover off but soon realized that the steering column has to be lowered, so I decided to wait until it gets a little warmer. I hate to work in the cold!

Mine comes out pretty easy.. unscrew it from the cable lead at the transmission and a slight tug makes it come out... :leaving:

I just did mine on my 73. Good source of info is the archives here when they work. Mine is one solid cable, I lubed mine with graphite. There are some that are a 2 piece cable I think depending on cruise control. Since mine was one piece, I had to get iunder the dash & remove the cable from the speedo, pulled the cable from the casing & graphited the cable.

I pulled the tranny end out and lubed it with wheel bearing grease. Works Ok.
