Default Quadrajet Numbers

I have a Quadrajet that was on a 1971 350/270hp. When checking to see if it was the original carb, I ran into a controversy. The numbers on the carb are clearly visible and legible. They are 40202 DH 2029. Now my question is not the decoding but the fact that there is no "70" stamped at the beginning of the number. Every decoding list indicates that there should be a 70 or some other number before the 40202. Can anyone shed some light on this problem? By the way, I think the carb came off of a 1970.

I can't solve your mystery, but I agree on the research you've done so far. According to The Corvette Black Book, a Q-jet with #7040202 came from a 1970 with 350ci 300hp engine. automatic transmission. I can't explain why the "70" is missing from the first part of your carb.

so it's clearly not the original carb for your 71 vette... the question is, did it come originally on a 70 vette. This would be a good question for someone who has looked at a lot of Qjets, to see if they have ever seen any without the leading "70" .....

Open this link. IT has all the info you need to figure out what car a Q-jet came from: http://www.corvettefaq.com/c3/QJet_Tuning_Paper.doc

Thanks for the great site ettev. Lots of good information. But it still didn’t answer the question why there is no 70 at the beginning of the number. It is definitely a Rochchester.

It's a correct carb. Some of them just didn't have the 70. Here's what Rick Bizocco say's about it in his 1969 Stingray Guidebook:
"The Rochester QuadraJet code prefix 70 was sometimes omitted. We have only seen 1970 carburetors without this prefix, however Hodges (1993) notes that some 1968 and 1969 carburetors were stamped at the plant without this prefix As noted above we interpret the 70 as the primary jet size and the 2 letter code when present as the secondary jet size."

BTW, it's a 1970 carb (the 2nd number after the 70 is the year), and it was manufactured July 21, 1969.

Many thanks JB. I was beginning to think that I had a counterfeit carb. It is even better that it is for a 1970. I bought the 1971 CJK engine for my 70. Couldn’t find a block for a 1970. So at least I’ll have an original carb to bolt on. Thanks again.
