Holidays are good for something, finally had time to do some major work on my car...it had been sitting for way too long with me onoly doing little things and waiting for the weather to clear up (and thus " wasting" my time here :) )
I still had to fix the birdcage so I got cracking. I trimmed a replacement section from a donor car to fit mine. It was an earlier car (pre 75) and there were actually some very slight differences in the birdcage. The profile of the lower runner is a tad different but nothing some welding can't fix.
Here's the before:
section cut out:
and after new section is welded in and painted with POR (man, my hands are stained AGAIN, will I ever learn to use gloves )
Then I decided it was time to start welding in the gussets I had fabricated too so.....
the best is yet to come, I have plans for a full cage and the boxed front sections will be topped off with a thick plate that will support the front of the cage, then a support behind the a arm moutns triangulated into the birdcage and running into a cage inside the car. I may even chop off the spring pockets and notch the frame there so I can run coil overs that bolt to the engine suframe so I can use longer coil overs.....

I'll be waiting to see your next step!!! You know I'm going steal most of your ideas!
I'm bumping this cus I can't see the pics now & would like to find it again later ;)
**EDIT** I could see them after I bumped this topic
TT your work looks great !!! IMHO the welder has to be about the best tool out there (man when will I get one :cry ). Looks like you made some real progress :yesnod:
TT, you do good work. Looks really nice. Almost looks like you should be ready to put the front end on sometime soon.
It looks deceiving but the whole thing is going apart again, I have to pull the body. It was mounted to properly jig the new section of birdcage, now that it's all welded up the boduy comes off again, some more welding will take place..the frame will be blasted and most likely powdercoated.
