In 1971 at least, the horn relay was coming with a buzzer. It is not clear to me what the condition(s) is(are) supposed to be to trigger the buzzer. Mine does buzz when I open the driver's door with apparently no other condition. I feel this is somewhat helpless so I keep the wire disconnected so that it does not bugg me.
Anyone has a better explanation of the purpose of this buzzer ?
The combination {driver door open}+{ignition key in}+{engine not running} makes sense to me.
Funny enough, my buzzer (when connected) works when the driver's (not the passenger's) door is open, whether the ignition key is in or not.
There is a plastic/copper brass switch in the steering column. These "switches" are different for standard columns and tilt/tele columns. If the switch breaks, the copper/brass "legs" make constant contact = buzz.
These switches are designed only to make contact with the key fully in the ignition cylinder. With the key out or even partially out, the switch won't make contact= NO buzz.
SO...the cure to your problem is to tear into your column and replace the switch. The "Bubba" fix is to cut the wire. Chuck
