I was wondering what all you guys think that a stock 78 L-82 auto could beat on the road? Assuming that the other cars were also stock... Keep in mind that im only like 130lbs...
I would choose my opponents wisely. Brand new the car only had 210 hp (at the crank). Right? There are lots and lots of cars, that are a lot lighter, these days, that will trump that. And, those cars are working with better drivetrains, better gear multiplication, etc.
But don't get too down. Here's the deal: it's not fair to compare yesterdays cars (what we are driving) to today's cars. It's apples and oranges. In it's day, your Vette was a hammer. And it managed to be the best, even though it had emissions and safety concerns to contend with, without the benefit of computers.
Watch out for Honda Odyssey minivans -- they'll whup your butt! For some reason, everyone that drives those things likes to tromp the go-fast pedal from each and every stoplight. :lolg:
But seriously folks. Let that car breathe -- desmog it and put in a true dual exhaust system -- and it'll at least keep up with the Volvos! (Yes, I am serious. I've got mine running so well now that it can just about keep up with the wife's Mercedes C320 :steering: )
It all depends if you get hooked up right. I was left in the dust by a late model Honda. I dont think it was all stock parts in it though. Your car will always look good if that is any consolation.
Didja see "Risky Business"? Tom Cruise in a Porsche 928 was passed by kids on bicycles. I owned a 75 L82, in its time it was ok... then I put on headers and true dual exhaust, recurved the distributor and rejetted the q-jet the car ran very quick then. Only beaten by a 73 L82 vette. You have a very good candidate for nitrous. Pure stock with nitrous it should out accelerate most cars and kids on bikes.
Mike
