I have my rear spring out, and i was wondering how tall should the arch be if the two ends are resting on the ground? This should be a good way to tell how much it has sagged out.
Just a thought. I would think the free-standing arch would be different depending on the number of leafs and the rating. You might want to check with VB&P, or Van Steel, or one of other companies that sells replacement springs.
It is definitely different. My 5 leaf has very little arc to it. I was pleased to find that to remove the bolts I don't even have to jack the end of the spring once the car's in the air!
Don't expect an inch difference between yours and a new one to mean an inch difference in ride height, or anything so direct. I think comparing the free arc to the arc on the car would be the best method, as that will essentially tell you if the spring rate is failing.
Re: rear spring arc height needed (LiveandLetDrive)
OK - my 9 leaf steel spring:
Standing on the ends, the TOP of the spring is exactly 13 inches off the ground.
How does this compare to yours ? (wondering if mine is sagging, too)
I have another one I could measure, but it was bolted up to the differential
this morning. Being bolted up in the center will definitely change the measurement. I'll pull it off tonight, given time.
NHVette,
I will remeasure mine tonight too. I will post back in the morning with the results. I thought it was 12", but now I am not sure! Let me check one more time.
