Found the source of top-end clacking...
I started removing rocker arms to see if a rocker stud had pulled loose, and discovered that the intake valve for cylinder #8 had broken
I managed to get the intake off and half the bolts out of the cylinder head before my wife had to steal me from the garage for a bit. I'll hopefully have the rest out and cylinder head off by supper time, and get my first look at how much damage has been done inside the cylinder...
The top flange of the valve broke, and the valve stem didn't drop all the way into the cylinder, I can still see the end of the shaft in the valve guide. If I'm lucky, I just dinged up the top of the piston and didn't hurt the cylinder wall. I hope the valve guide isn't wrecked. Maybe I can even get away without replacing the piston until this winter when I had planned my rebuild! If not, I have a new chrome oil pan that's been waiting for installation anyway, so this will be my excuse to drop the old pan, and replace a nasty leaking rear main seal while I am at it.
Wish me luck!
