Default The Spare Tire

Today I had planned to get rid of my 32+ year old spare tire and keep the carrier in place primarily for the look.

Guess I am the last one to discover the carrier is held snug by the downward pressure caused by the weight of the spare tire. So, I ended up cleaning the carrier and tire and putting it back in there. Actually, the tire is useless to me, but I don't want the carrier clanking around everytime there is a bump in the road.

Somehow I just don't think my can of Fix-A-Flat will apply enough pressure to keep things tight back there. I perfer not to get rid of the carrier. Any ideas?

I've never had a spare tire in mine. It never really moved around much but I put a zip-tie around the rear portion that keeps in place. And I guess the bottom (front) is at enough of an angle that it never bounces up. You might try that. Or, just keep the tire in there, it provides more protection in a rear-end collision.

Why not just get a good spare tire? If you need it you have it and it will hold things tight.

Get rid of the carrier. It looks better when the bottom is clean to.

I lowered my carrier for the first time ever yesterday. I've had the car for a couple of years but have worked on other more important parts I guess. I could see part of a tire in there so I assumed it was a spare. When I got it open all I found was the tire - no rim! And an old tire at that - with a couple of roofing tacks stuck in it! Guess the previous owner put it in there just for the weight or to keep the carrier from rattling.

Going to look into the suggestions here. Still perfer to keep the carrier, but might take it off on a trial basis.

If you are not concerned about the weight and prefer the look with the carrier, I would take the above suggestion and get a usable spare.

I have a question about spare tires. What was the original size? Were they the baby spare size or will a normal 15x7 fit under there? When I was coming back from a trip to FL, I was able to obtain a used 15x8 aluminum wheel (factory alloy) but was unable to make it fit in the carrier. Can't imagine how a wheel with a tire would fit in there. Does it hang down along ways when you carry it? Ok so I had more than ONE question.....

if your trying to loose weight but want to keep the carrier get an inner tube, fill it and put in place of the tire and rim.

Had to chime in, been working on my 69 all winter, redoing EVERERYTHING, tearing out the IRS this week, decided to drop the spare and walla brand new never used original white line wide oval, in really good shape. I don`t think it`s ever been out of the carrier, still got the rubber nubs on it. Rim looks brand new too..... put some kind of spare in your vette, ya never know ya might need it.. :chevy
