Default Help! 76 Rear Body Mounts

My first Vette. Forum members inform me to replace the rear body mounts, I have to remove the rear bumper and loosen the #3 mounts. Why must the rear bumper be removed? Any tricks to doing this? How hard a job? Is there a way to shoot penatrating oil on the cage nuts? It was also suggested that I replace the mount rests on the body. Who sells them? Last but not least, I don't have a hoist, so any suggestions on a safe place to jack the body the three inches that I need to replace the mounts?

First, I don't think you will need to remove the bumper entirely, but you might
need to remove the taillight supports. As long as the (fragile) plastic bumper
cover is not connected to the steel/aluminum bumper ... you should be OK.

As far as the #4 body mounts, I have never heard of anyone actually getting
those out. The cage nut is up in the back of the rear compartment ... so yeah
hit those with PB Blaster and let them soak. If you're gonna replace the #4
body reinforcement, then don't bother - as you willwant to be ripping all that
stuff up anyway.

You can use the aluminum body rivets to put them back on, but I will opt for
3/16 stainless pop rivets with backer washers. Some adhesive and sealer will
also be used on mine.

If your #4 reinforcements are rusted out, then you should also look at the #1s.

Here is how I got my #4 bolts off:
The whole cage nut thing is coming out ... and being replaced by a bolt and
washer inserted from the top.
