I rebuilt the box. Followed all instructions on corvettefaq(Thanks Jim) to the letter. Did the same from service manual. In car adjustments. and so on. The steering is not returning to center no matter how I adjust it.
Also, as I was testing the rolling torque. It wasnt always peaking at center point.. ??? I get different readings as I turn left vs. turning right. Strange.
Is it possible I put the worm gear in backwards? Or is the box shot? Any ideas? Thanks in advanced.
There are several things I would check:
Worn bushings?
Pitman arm?
Ball joints?
Power steering cylinder?
Front end alignment?
Tire pressure?
Wheel bearings?
I think all of these could cause the symptoms you mentioned.
Get the front end in the air, and with engine still, run the steering through it's range, if it seems to bind,.....maybe disconnest the power assist ram from the frame at that bracket......run the steering wheel through it's range then, if binding, it allmost has to be the box....something in the adjustment...but you may want to see if maybe one of the tie rod collars, the one's with the bolts in it...are not rubbing the rear of the controll arms when car is on ground normally....had that happen once on a GM car, not sure which one though....
then if all this checks out, assemble car and do the same thing up in the air with engine running, and if then the wheel seems to turn itself in one direction and the adjustment at the power assist controll valve....a bolt in the end under a dust cover, does not center it up...this is a fairly sensitive adjustment best done with ram not conncected to frame, as above....
if you can't get it centered in the power assist mode..engine running....you need to maybe loosen up the amount of turns you have when you maybe installed the new valve on the end of the drag link....too many turns too tight and the valve stem in the middle gets jammed and causes power assist to go to one side or another.....
