I filled up my tank in my 72 vert with gas to the top and I noticed a drip leak from the vapor cannister. I have filled my car up a dozen times since I got it and have never seen this, but my question is if you fill the tank up too high will this happen regardless or is my cannister bad? Pardon the ignorance with this but my previous vettes, musclecars were pre emission controls and didn't have stupid devices like these.

The vapor cannister was intended to catch vapor from the fuel tank and carb bowl vent. It is possible that the purge valve in the cannister has failed and allowed vapor to build up to the point of enough liquid to drip. However, it seems like you would be smelling fuel for quite some time befor that happened.
There is a trouble shooting list under "Diagnosis Evaporative Control System" in the GM Shop Manual for your year car.
Seems to be a more common problem then you would think. I believe it's a malfunction of the gas tank vent separator. This little device is there to allow gas fumes to purge to the evaporative canister but not allow liquid gas to pass. When stuck open on a hot day and a full tank, liquid gas can be pushed to the canister which usually results in gas dripping from the intake line. Only solution is to replace separator (they are hard to find), plug the line (not recommended), or don't over fill the tank.
Good Luck :chevy

:iagree: If you do decide to plug it, you must change to a vented gas cap like the 69 back cars.
I looked underneath today and saw that the device you are talking about (gas/vent separator)is not hooked up, rather the evap line goes from tank straight to line on frame rail. It appears one fitting on separator is broken off...hence some previous owner bypassed it.
