It's been five months with the Pertronix-2 igntion system and although it's got a bad wrap by a few froum members it really does what it says it's saupposed to.
If you actually follow the instructions it take 30 moinutes including pulling the distributer only if it has end play (brass washer/ shims) if no end play it could be set up in 15 minutes.
I stupidly bent mine when I installed a new vacuum cannister which had nothing to do with the P-2 but my own stupidity. I straightened the frame out and after 2000 miles it has no wear. Hell aside from my goof up it shows no wear. Before it took some pedal to start the car now I just reach into the interior and fires right up. Anyway just checked it out this morning and as good as ever. I expect this unit to outlast the Vette.
I've been back and forth about the P2 or the Breakerless SE system. Breakerless SE is a bit more money but I don't know if there is any more advantage to it other than 1 wire rather than 2. I keep hoping the price will come down.
I've been using the product for almost 20 years now with no complaints. You should always check the grounding wire from the advance plate to the distributor body to insure it has not failed in a Pertronix system, if the wire is broken, there can be an intermittant miss of the ignition system.
I installed my "Ignitor" (pre-ignitor II) 4 1/2 years (12,000 mi) ago, and have had no problems. I haven't once missed the good old days of adjusting the points! :smash:
I thought the only benefit I would get from the PII was quicker starts and no messing with points, but the damn thing definitely had more HP. Prior to installing, car idled at 750 rpm, after install, idling at 1100 with same throttle position. Tells you how much more efficient car runs with it.
I just installed the breakerledd SE (replaced a petronix) I never had a problem with the Petronix, but I just liked the mechanics of the brealerless SE system more. It runs much smoother (but the whole distrubitor was rebuilt by Lars) so I dont attribute the better proformsaance to either unit but to the fact there is a new distrib. in the engine. I think either will be fine.
