Default oil pan removal

How difficult is it to remove the oil pan on a '70 350? I need to replace the seal on the bottom of the timing chain cover, and my friend who owns a service station is going to help me (nice to use a lift!). What needs to be removed first? steering componants? He said that with some cars the motor needs to be jacked up as well.

Thanks

Joe

Remove the two bolts holding the idler arm to the frame.
Pull down on linkage a little.
Drop pan.

FWIW: I found it easier to remove and reinstall the pan because the crank windage tray on my L82 when I removed the starter. It allowed me to put a slight twist on the pan to clear the baffle rails.

Use the one-piece pan gasket when you put it all together again.

While it's down you might as well replace the rear main seals. Cheap and about 10 minutes work.

If you have pwr steering...(along with above mentioned idler arm) you might also remove the steering ram frame bracket. That will drop the suspension down even further.

What I do is disconnect:
(1) right (passenger) tie rod from steering relay rod
(2) PS ram from frame bracket
(3) relay rod from idler arm

The relay rod can now be dropped down and swung completely out of the way.
