Re: Broken off bolt in engine block... Advice needed... (GrandSportC3)
it's only a small section of block that came off, lucky you. After you get the bolt out round off the inside corners a bit so the crack does not propagate and the entire thread is messed up.

Actually your lucky. I would center punch than easy out that bolt. I just bought an easy out kit and tap kits for a broken off bolt in the frame that holds the rear exhaust valance on. I center punched the bolt, then carefully drilled the center and backed out the bolt easily I might butt. you could use a heli-coil in there and go with a smaller starter bolt. It looks as only 25% of the threads are affected so you have ample torqing ability. Now this was a crate block. Did it come with the starter already assembled? If so I'd have a professional do the work and send them the bill.

I installed the starter myself on the engine... about 2 years ago.. BTW - the broken off part doesn't have any thread.. The thread only starts deeper...
Re: Broken off bolt in engine block... Advice needed... (GrandSportC3)
I just pulled the starter motor.. and here is what I found
I don't think that I'm going to mess with that myself.. I need a welder.. A small part of the block broke off
At least the starter motor and the flywheel seem unharmed...

Usually that breaks because somebody did not use the brace at the tailend of the starter to keep it from "bouncing" which will cause that ear to crack.

yup! gotta have that bracket on there or this is exactly what happens...
Re: Broken off bolt in engine block... Advice needed... (henderjl)
Be careful with the EZ-Out. If you break the EZ-Out, you will never drill it out since it is hardened. You may be better off to drill the bolt out and put in a Heli-Coil.
:iagree: I snapped off a water pump bolt with the engine still in the car. I tried everything before finally drilling it out and putting in an Heli-Coil.

How does this brace look like that you are talking about?? I installed the starter the way I bought it about 2 years ago...
Re: Broken off bolt in engine block... Advice needed... (GrandSportC3)
yes, mine broke the same way a few months ago. I wasnt using the brace. I will take a pic and post it. Give me a few minutes. Hmm... cant seem to find my digital camera. Here is a link of the brace though. It connects onto the long stud that sticks out of the back of the starter and bolts to then engine. http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?d...4P0WQ28KKC41U5

Re: Broken off bolt in engine block... Advice needed... (GrandSportC3)
Olivier,
The brace for the starter is only for stock size starters. If you are using a mini gear-reduction starter, then it isnt needes.
Not sure if you have a stock starter or not. Just trying to help you avoid confusion.
