I've got a 68 vert. and while I was removing the rear spring (from where it bolts to the diff.) when I got to the pasenger side foward most bolt, oil started draining from bolt hole in the diff. is this supposed to happen? If not what could be the problem.
The casting looks good, I've cleaned it up and it doesn't seem to have any cracks. I've never had a problem with it leaking before just this experience.
I have read through my service manual and haven't found anything regarding this type of problem.
Probably cracked rear cover. Look close to see,if so then you have to drop the rear end out to replace it. Get a HD Muskegon cover to avoid and spring install problems and checkhte yoke play while you have it out.

If it's coming from the rear cover bolt hole the cover is no good.I'm going to email you a picture of the inside of a good cover. You will see there is a casting boss in there where the hole is tapped but it isn't open to the differential. Maybe the factory or somebody in the past drilled it too much and blew a hole into it.

Cracked rear covers are a very common malady on these cars. Nonetheless, the cover needs replaced if oil is leaking from it. Muskegon Brake sells a very nice heavy duty cover. Buy direct from them to get the best price. A lot of vendors sell the same cover for $20 or more than MB's price. Beware of some of the "reinforced" covers that you will also find for sale. Many of them won't work with the spare tire carrier because the reinforcements will interfere.
