Well I can upload now to the forum again, so here's some more pics.
I did notice that the AFR's mount the headers higher than the Sportman II's did. The header tubes now touch the lower frame where it passes under & they didn't touch before.
Once the sending unit is mod'ed, I should be able to fire this :D
Oops, I should also mention that I need to figure out how to mount my new bronze distributor gear. It appears that Mallory must drill the crosshole thru the gear when it's mounted on the shaft because the hole on both are off center by .050. Now the new gear's crosshole doesn't line up for the spring dowel that holds it in place
Mike - That's odd that your Mallory shaft hole is not drilled on center. It would have to be a factory defect. I'd call them up and get a new shaft.
Personnally I would not use a bronze gear. I've used them on my dragster motors because your not really putting any miles or time on them. I'm using the Polymer carbon fiber gear. I'm up to 2500 miles or so and it looks new. Actually it's hard to tell because it doesn't have or get ware marks to see if it's even meshing right.
If your going to use bronze. I would suggest that you aquire the morroso motor oil primer and dist. depth gauge tool and shim the dist. to the exact height required. I'm using a .035 steel shim without the stock dist. gasket.
You're way ahead of me Mike. Looks great. Can't believe how the chrome Hookers diacolored.
What type of carb heat shield is that?
Len, I'm suprised that I'm ahead of you, your BBC looks great & pretty much all there viewing it on your site :smash: It is amazing how dark the header tubes, I think it's because of my old engine ran do rich.
I believe the heat shield is the Holley (jegs p/n 510-108-70)
Thanks Fevre, I can't wait to start blasting the gears :D I just recieved some tuning parts today to try & dial in this carb once I start driving it. The secondaries were opening early & hard before feeling like I just press the gas pedal down a lot further when they opened. I'm going to try for a much smoother transition this time ;)
George I couldn't believe that it's off that much. I took the old gear to work this morning and checked it with gage pins, .050 difference from one side to the other with a pin inserted in the crosshole. You can see it's off on the dist shaft also so maybe they drilled the 2 together
I would have loved to go with the poly gear now, but I've already spent too much trying to get this thing back on the road
I've got a primer ready to use right before I get ready to fire it. I set the carnk to 10 degrees BTDC today also in hopes of getting it fired right off ;)
SmokedTires that's a good looking engine but I have a question. It appears that you have the heat shield against the intake then the spacer and then the carb. I thought the correct way was spacer went on first then the heat shield and then the carb. I'm going to be installing these soon on my car and that's why I'm asking.
i have a question Smoked-- are they super comp sidemount headers? and the heads appear to be angle plugs-- if all that is true, then according to the application chart for the headers on holley's site, they claim the headers won't fit on angle plug heads, but it looks like they are fitting for you.
i've been wanting to get a set of sidemounts, but i am concerned there won't be enough clearance for my heads--- i have victor jr's with angle plugs.
Re: AFR's & Hooker sidemount headers mounted (Older Than Dirt)

That is the way I mounted it, intake, gasket, heat shield, gasket, spacer, gasket, carb. I don't remember getting any instructions with the heat shield so I put the spacer between to set the carb further from the shield. You may be correct as I went into this installation blind

any feedback would be appreciated.
Yes my Hooker sidemounts are Super Comps & yes the AFR's are angle plug heads. I also had these headers mounted to World Products Sportman II's angle plug. The headers fit the Sportman II's better, I had to message the headers a bit to fit the AFR's.
I think Hooker puts that note in becasue they probably don't want people returning the headers because a tube may need to be dented here or there to fit all the different heads that are available ;)

sneaky bastards. looks like i'm getting a set after all! now i'm sure they'll fit victor jr's without much of a headache.

If I put my spacer on first, then the heat shield, I get accel pump arm interference. I bleve the correct way is to put on the heat shield, then the spacer. Lookin good!! Get a vid for us when u fire it up.

That engine looks great. I was wondering how much room you had with the Sportsman heads between the tubes and frame before the change. How far did the tubes raise?
My Victor Jr. heads are .300" raised exhaust port I would imagine the AFR's are similar or they could even be .600". They are raised to straighten out the exhaust flow as much as possible I think.
That's going to be one nasty motor, mines together now will be dropping it in soon. I am just going to run the stock MSD distributor gear I think, I looked at the Comp Cams Composite carbon ultra-poly drive gear and this is what I found :
"*Special Note: Not recommended for internal oil pump applications" :D

Well, the purpose of the heat shield is to keep excessive intake heat from the pumpwells which will boil the fuel after hot engine shutdown flooding the engine. The heat shield could be modified to clear the pump arms. It makes more sense to me that the spacer should be separating the heat shield and carb from the intake, but I could be wrong and it certainly won't be the first time. If you're not having any problems I guess it doesn't matter. :D
