Default Steering Column Question

I've got a 73 with tilt and telescope. I have lots of vertical movement in the steering wheel, not coming from the til mechanism, but the steering wheel itself. Being a 30 year old column, i'm not surprised the bushings are worn out. Is there a rebuild kit for these things? I've got it taken apart to the point where i can get the ignition cylinder out, exactly how far do i have to dig into this thing? Thanks, Mike

Mike,
You may have a worn upper bushing in the column. You can change with the column installed, but I don't know if you can get em anywhere. Its a pita to change cause there's a c-clip holding securing the shaft and to overcome the preload spring for the tele you need a "bridge" something or other. Or some very strong thumbs. I'm trying to get mine reinstalled now. Good luck.

Go to http://www.corvettefaq.com and look in the Steering section. There are three papers and pics on disassembly and repair of the Corvette T&T steering column. You have to remove the pivot pins to get at the bearing in the upper housing.

There is a bridge tool that you can purchase (and sometimes borrow) from Autozone and other automotive shops. It will compress the lock plate while you remove the c-clip.

Good luck, additional help is only a post or eMail away.

I just bought a steering column puller from Pep boys for $16.00. Worked great on my 82 with tilt. Had the C clip in in minutes

It is not a bushing that you want. It sounds as if you need an upper column bearing. Zip has one listed as SC-655 69-82 Column Upper Shaft Bearing.
