I raced the quarter this weekend and the times were horrible. The motor is very strong , but for some reason at 4500 rpm the car would not advance anymore. It has a Holly Dominator 650...3 speed auto and a 355. It definatley needs gears being that it has a 3.08 rear end. What do you think it is? It wasn't bogging down or anything, it just seemed like it was maxed out at 4500rpm. The CAM is new and is a comp 262. Could it be an issue with the carb not being tuned, or could it be an issue with the timing, or maybe an issue with the torque converter or stahlconverter? Please any help would be greatly appreciated.
By the way in case you were wondering the car is a 71 and it ran 15.4 consitently in the quarter. :seeya

Are you sure that you're running a Dominator carb? :skep: If you are, it may just be too much! I think a Dominator is rated at ~1100 cfm. If you aren't, I would suspect that you are probably running out of fuel at higher RPM's. I would check fuel pressure/fuel filter/etc.

What was the your other info.

15.4 just tell us that you are running about where a mild 355 would be at with 3:08 gears. You should be in the mid 14's with that combo, so something is wrong.

Any indication of pinging? My car is similar to yours ('69 coupe, 350/300, mild cam, home-ported 186 heads, small valves, headers, 3.08 rear, 4 speed). One day at the track it wouldn't pull at higher RPM. Turned out I had way too much total timing. The little plastic bushing on the centrifugal advance stop pin fell off. I was running a mix of race gas and 94 octane and though it didn't ping it just stopped pulling. Your max timing with full centrifugal advance (no vacuum) should be around 38 degrees with stock heads. My car has run a best of 14.013, and 99.88 mph through the mufflers on street tires. You should be in the 14s
Check to see if you throttle goes all the way wide open when your foot is on the floor.
:iagree: This is the "prefered" problem, and easiest fix!! Seems to me almost any other problem would show more symptoms. If it was fuel delivery I would expect your engine to more like quit, or "fall on its face" at a given rpm, not merely level off. Check this first, and hopefully that's all it is. (very common, BTW) Very often the linkage simply is not opening the carb all the way. Occasionally, the driver will notice that his floormat is preventing the accelerator from going all the way to the floor!! :)
Here's an eye opener on 1/4 times. According to CAR LIFE magazine, a stock '69 Corvette with the base 350/300 engine, automatic, 3.08 rear ran 16.1@84 mph. With the 350/350 engine, 4 speed, 4.11 rear it ran 14.6 @ 97 mph.
This info came out of the book "American Supercar" by Roger Huntington. This is a great book. Lot's of pics of old iron, 1/4 mile times, all makes.

Those times are also on 1969 technology tires. Modern rubber should account for a pretty decent pickup.
