looked at the above, trim code 407 paint 974, need to know the correct color and trim. Car needed work, chassis had a patch in one area, trailing arms seemed to be coming apart on the lower surface, paint was shot, interior fair, soft top was ok. New tires and exhaust. The car was unmolested, but neglected. 350/300 4-speed, red ext/black int, no air,ps,pb 13,200. Need advice.....JC
407 is red vinyl interior, 974 is Monza Red paint.
If the trailing arms are pulling apart and the frame has already been spot repaired, my advice to you would be to walk away and don't look back. It's likely that the birdcage is rusty including the rocker channels and windshield frame. Combine this with the fast that the car needs paint, and you're looking at > $10k just for frame/rust repairs and paint unless you do every bit of the work yourself.
Find the best, most rust-free car that you can and you'll always be better off in the end. As we say down here in the south. "You Can't Polish a Turd".
I would concur with Shannon's first paragraph, but would slightly disagree with the second with respect to "You Can't Polish a Turd". You can polish a turd, but you just end up with a polished turd
All depends what you are looking for, what you want to do with it and how much you want to work on it.
If you want a car you can drive on a regular basis and not worry about how original and optioned it is..see how low the guy will go...then its up to you as to wether you want to pay that much.
If you want a car to restore and show, well the money required to restore the car (Paint, interior, chassis work) will probably not worth it for a 320/300 4 speed car.
On a side note, I have noticed that 68-72 prices in New York have been going through the roof in the last 18 months and fewer and fewer seem to be for sale.
Steve, with all due respect, have you ever personally tried to polish a turd? I've tried every kind of polishing compound, wax, or glaze known to man. I've used high speed buffers, random orbit buffers, and elbow grease with a 100% cotton applicator. I've never, ever been able to get the slightest amount of gloss or shine despite hours of labor.
It'll never work as an investment, but if you have the time and know-how to do a frame it could be a very nice car. Initial price would have to be quite low for me to take it.
I would say move cautiously, but don't run away. Trailing arms can be relatively easily replaced. Where is the frame patch? At the kickup? I would have somebody who knows frames have a look. Like it or not these cars are worth more and more. If it was a 67 that car would be mid 20s in that shape. He may be a little high, but I'll bet he gets that price or close. Yes it would take $15-20k to restore it, but you'd have a $30k car. If you don't enjoy the chase, then spend $30k and get one done.
