my new supercomp side exhaust just arrived today and i had read some posts warning not spend the money on the glasspacks made by hooker cuz they dont sound good I think someone suggested that you use some cheapo glass packs and just stuffem in the pipes. So my question is what do i have to do to modify the cheapo glasspacks to fit insided the pipes? how do the hooker versions mount and if anyone could post the dimensions of the mounting flange on the hooker glasspacks. :seeya
The hooker mufflers just slide down into the side pipes. They are about four feet long and are just slightly smaller in diameter than the side pipes. On each end of the mufflers there is a kind of soft metal flange that flares out to hold the muffler in place inside the side pipe.
Sometimes at idle they will rattle a little in there. Annoying a times but harmless.
As for sound? From inside the car they sound kind of weak. But when I have seen someone else drive my car away from me, they have a nice mellow rumble. It's hard to describe. But it could be a bit louder and I wouldn't mind.
now that i have your attention i have a second question. :D
do you really have to get the car 36 inches off the ground as the instructions say you do? or can you just work the headers in with the car on the ground.
and thanks for the info on the glasspacks. I think ill try the cheapo way since ive spent enough on the pipes and headers already.
open pipes might not be a bad idea but im affraid it will be too loud and its my daily driver i put at least 70 miles on it every day so i could only hope to avoid the cops for so long. :cry
but then again i might just be able to out run them :reddevil
I had my car on jack stands and blocks and was able to install my Hooker sidepipes. I don't think you'll be able to do it with the car just sitting on the ground because you bring the headers in from the bottom.
When I installed the second set of Hooker sidepipes on mine (the first set had rusted out after many years), I looked closely at the Hooker glasspipe inserts. I couldn't bring myself to install a glasspack with an 1-7/8" I.D. I modified a set of Cyclone Purple Hornies to drop into the sidepipes. Did it ever wake up the engine. It also woke up the neighbors and scared off the dogs. I ran them exactly one day. I then found out about the JCL spiral baffles and have been very happy with them power and noise wise. And to those running no mufflers what so ever, you have more understanding neighbors than I do! :D Charles
When I installed the headers I just had the car sitting on a pair of ramps in the front and jackstands in the rear. I had actually jacked up the front and put the ramps under the wheels backwards so that I had more room behind the tire to work. There is actually a lot of room to move them around into position. The only tough part is the steering box. Things get a bit tight in that area. On the right side the A/C air box can be kind of a bother too.
When the smog check bulls&*% started, I had to have the AIR tubes brazed into the primary tubes. The side pipes would not come off the collectors. So I removed the header/sidepipes as assemblies. The rear of the car actually had to be higher than the front, but we got them out. Then put them right back in the same way.
So don't worry too much about the three feet in the air deal. Just take your time and they should slide right into position.

I'm still waiting for my side tubes, but the Hooker inserts showed up the other day. The I.D. of the passage is more like 1 3/4" and it's choked off even further by 1/2" "divots" protruding into the flow. True, these are directional mufflers but I would have liked to have seen Hooker just perforate the inner tubes instead of punching in those "scoops."
They also weight quite a bit.
I'll probably wind up leaving them out all together.
Is it true that if you get a ticket for too loud and then put the muffers in and prove to the court that you have, you can get the ticket reduced or revoked?
