Good for you letting him use the car. I gave my son a 75 last year for his graduation and we spent the summer rebuilding it.
Everyone has an opinion on these cars;.... show car, race car,NCRS numbers cars, garage queen, etc, etc, etc. I can't be the only one here who remembers when they were just another used chevy and didn't command much value?
I drove vettes everyday of the year, rain, snow, cold, no garage, punched them, kicked them, walked across them and they ran fine. My point is a corvette is just a machine. A cool car, but just a car and sometimes not made all that well. They break, you fix them. Let the kid use the car, if he's a good kid you needn't worry. Learn to work on it together it will be time you get to share that won't last forever.
My dad let me drive his green 4door 1996 ford! Until I slid into a lincoln! That's probably why the only way I was going to drive a vette was for me to buy one!
My dad let me drive the 69 when I had my temporary permit. He was with me of course. The first time I drove it alone was when I was 17. From then on I was allowed to take it whenever I wanted as long as I let him know I was taking it. As it ends up I am the only one that drives the car anymore unfortunately. Just sits in the garage except for the once a week i take it around the block. :nonod:
You did the right thing... I wanted to drive my dad's Vette (Currently mine) To my high school prom back in 2000. They told me no. I was a good kid, never had any problems at home, but the Corvette was something they didn't feel safe leaving in my posession. Well whatta ya know, it's in my driveway now. A little bit old for prom again, but it's tons of fun.
If your trust is well placed I don't see a problem.
My daughter has been driving my and my ex's Corvettes since she was sixteen. Of course I started her on cleaning detail when she was three years old. So far, so good. :D
My daughter loves riding in a convertible. She is taking drivers ed now, and thinks she won't drive the vette 'til she's 30. I may surprise her next year, if she's good. Joe
i started a frame off restore when i was 15. im nearly 17 now and have it almost completed. i've learned to respect my baby. i hope i have kids one day like me.
I had a bad experience during that parade after high school. It was 1988 and one of my friends dad had an old convertible, I think it was a Comet? red with black top. Only driven on sundays, car was showroom perfect. I was driving behind her in my yellow 75' VW beetle (also a convertible, my first car). We were tooting along slowly in town getting ready to pass by the school when some juniors in a black muscrat (5.0 Mustang GT) were doing donuts and weaving in and out of the cars in the parade line. The Comet slammed into the car in front of her at about 20 mph and the girls sitting up on top of the back seat went flying and hit the top of the windshield. The driver had her hand on the top of the steering wheel at 12:00 and when she hit she broke her wrist clean in two.
Good job! Many parents don't instill personal responsibility anymore.
Our '78 is a father-son project that is going real slow since he's now at the Coast Guard Academy. What I don't understand is that he really wants a C-4 ...
At least he still wants a 'Vette! (Don't know what I'd do if he said a Honda...)
