Default Rear Bumper Screws

I have a 78 Vette that I am replacing the front and rear bumpers. On the rear bumper I managed to get all the bolts off except for the sets of 3 screws behind the lights. Since the screw heads are on the inside of the bumper, how do you get them out? There is little room to take them out from the inside. It looks like the square nuts on the ring that sits inside the light pocket are part of the ring. Any suggestions?

These are not screws-they are studs with like a rivet head that holds it to a "retainer". Kinda like a big ring that has these "studs" fastened to it. There are no "individual" screws as you might think. As you loosen them, you can inch the bumper "away" from the car body, making them shorter as you go. The absolute easiest way to remove '74-'82 rear bumpers is with the fuel tank out.

There's 8 of them. I know, I removed those. The one's I'm talking about are the onles behind each of the lights. There's a round bracket with three square nuts that look like they are welded to the bracket. The screw heads on the screws are on the inside of the bumper. I can just get a small phillips head screw driver into the head from the inside. There's 4 of these round retainers with three screws each behind the lights.

Did this on my 78 recently... Get a screwdriver bit like you can change on some screwdriver handles, they usually come as phillips, flathead etc. put it in a pair of vice grips and you will be able to get it in there and turn em. I sprayed the area heavily with a penetrating oil several times before I started.
Hope this helps.

Thanks. I'll give that a try. What a crappy design though. Why not hex head bolts like all the other bolts? If you strip one of these things, you have to drill it out. I bought a True Flex bumper and it says I don't need to use those to attach it.

Thanks again

If you are replacing the bumpers, why not cut them off? When replacing the bumper hardware, I suggest you use the SS bolt kits.
