Default Temperature Sending Unit

I rebuilt my 1970 350. Before the rebuild the temperature gage read correctly. I replaced the temperature sending unit with one from Auto Zone during the rebuild. After that the gage did not go above 160 degrees. I checked the wiring- good. I replaced the sending unit again, with one from Auto Zone. I got the same readings. Neither of the new sending units looked exactly like the one I replaced. I discarded the original. Does the gage require a special sending unit? How can I check out the gage? Help!!!

Everything I read about these sending units said that none of the aftermarket units are calibrated correctly for our cars. Lectric Limited sells one that is supposed to be correct. I bought one a few weeks ago, but haven't installed it yet, so I can't vouch for its accuracy.

Hope that helps!
