Default Stupid question - Zip starter heat shield

I just bought a starter solenoid heat sheild from Zip (part M-316), but can't figure out how it goes in. (I am allowed to mention them, right?), I thought they advertised here. Sorry if not.

Anyway, if someone has some advice, let me know.

Thanks,
David

If it is a reflective like wraparound piece, (sorry could not find it on zips website) jack up the front of the car and slide it between the starter motor body and the engine block. I used a wide gasket scraper type tool, to gently coerce the blanket up. Then pull it around and velcro tight. Sorry if it is a different type of shield.

Dave...post the part numbers and links to the part.
My feeling is that you bought the metal heat shield right? Do you have the stock starter and mounting bracket?
My guess is that you have the stock starter but are missing the mounting bracket that attaches to the forward end of the starter.

Sorry, I got both the metal head shield, and the nut (sorry for the long URLs!):

And the Starter shield nut:

Dave all I can say is
Are you using a stock starter? Does it have the bracket attaching it to the block?

I've got a stock starter, but it bolts directly to the block (BB, BTW).

I've got my old starter and tried it in various positions, but couldn't figure it out.

Guess I'll write off to Zip. Its the little stupid little things like this that frustrate me! :banghead:

Thanks,
David

On my SB there is a bracket that holds the forward end of the starter to the block. It also connects to a ground. The stock starters are very heavy and This bracket prevents the starter from wobbling around. I'd see if your bb needed one.

Here is a pic of the front. It attaches to the front support bracket at the engine block.

Here is a pic of the back. It attaches to the solenoid mounting bolt. You would just add a nut and washer to the existing bolt, you didn't need a $6 nut.

I'm not all that interested in NCRS so I upgraded to a Moroso heat shield from summit:

Better coverage, better materials and cheaper. It fit and looks great. Well worth the point deduction.

I also added one of these to make removal and installation easier.

It sure made the install easier.

The "barrel" nut holds rear of shield to a longer than normal starter solenoid screw that extends out through the starter frame. Does that sound like it makes sense? :yesnod:

Gator,

Took a while, but I think I've got it! :hurray:

It'll have to wait a week, I'm out of town, but tried it on my spare starter, and it seems to make sense, just need to check that I don't have something else screwed into the block. Took a while, but finally got it through my thick head.
